Künefe from Istanbul
- 500g kantaifi pastry
- 400g cream cheese or anthotyro
- 100ml milk
- 225g fresh cow's butter
- For the syrup:
- 600g sugar
- 2 cups water
- juice of 1/2 lemon
Melt the butter at low heat. Place over half the kantiaifi pastry into a greased baking dish. Pour half the melted butter over it, and mix gently.
In a bowl, mix the milk and cheese until smooth. Spread the mixture over the kantaifi, taking care to spread evenly. Place the rest of the kantaifi pastry on top, careful to cover the fillingcompletely. Pour the rest of the melted butter using a spoon, to make sure the whole surface is buttered.
Bake for 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 180° C until golden. Remove from the oven and leave the dessert to cool.
Meanwhile, prepare the syrup by boiling the ingredients fro 7 minutes. When done, pour the syrup over the dessert, cut into square pieces, and serve.
