Ingredients

  • eggs:3
  • sugar: 3 tbs
  • self-raising flour: ¾ cup
  • ground cinnamon: 3 tsp.
  • butter: 185 gr., melted
  • coarsely chopped walnuts: ¾ cup
  • For the syrup
  • sugar: 1 cup
  • water: ¾ cup
  • lemon: ½

Directions

  1. Butter a medium-size rectangular baking dish whose sides are approximately 23 cm. Beat the eggs and the sugar in a bowl with a mixer until the mixture turns white. Add the flour sifted with the ground cinnamon, mixing all the while. Add the butter and walnuts.

  2. Pour the batter into the baking dish  and bake at 180ο C for 35-40 minutes. Leave in the oven and prepare the syrup. Mix the water and sugar in a pot and add the peel of half a lemon. Boil for 7-8 minutes. Remove the peel, and pour the syrup over the cake.

Tips

A traditional sweet, loved by children and adults. Karydopita can be served hot or cold and can be accompanied by whipped cream, ice cream or by a rich meringue.
